Yesterday, Jesus called us to humility. Today, that lesson continues.
The mother of James and John approaches Jesus, asking that her sons be given places of honor. Jesus uses this moment to teach once again that greatness in God’s kingdom is found in humble service. He says, “Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.”
Jesus then points to himself as the example. “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
If we desire honor in God’s kingdom—if we desire holiness—then we must live as Jesus lived. We must love something or someone more than we love ourselves. We must give as Jesus gave.
This sacrificial gift of self leads to eternal life.
Are we willing to give the gift of love—the gift of ourselves—for God?
