In today’s first reading, God says, “Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings.”
Everything of purely human origin will eventually disappoint us. Science is good, but it has limits. Doctors are necessary, but they cannot prevent death. Soldiers protect us—until they cannot. Politicians, priests, and poets are all human, all fallible, all sinners like everyone else. Similarly, the person who relies only on himself will eventually confront his own limitations. We are flawed people.
So where do we turn for perfection? Where do we look for salvation?
We look to God alone — perfect in knowledge, love, presence, and power. “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.” That person will never be disappointed.
As we continue our Lenten journey, we should honestly ask ourselves: Where do I place my trust?
