Suzanne Lester, principal of Elyria Catholic High School, will become associate superintendent of elementary schools in the Diocese of Cleveland effective July 1.
Frank O’Linn, secretary for education and superintendent of diocesan schools, announced her appointment on March 9. She replaces Tracey Arnone, who is retiring.
“I am thrilled to welcome Suzanne to our leadership team. Her depth of experience, pastoral approach, and demonstrated commitment to the mission of Catholic education will strengthen our elementary schools at a pivotal time,” said O’Linn. “She brings a proven ability to support leaders, foster collaboration and keep Catholic identity at the heart of school culture.”
He said Lester will provide leadership and support to the diocesan elementary schools across the eight counties of the diocese, supporting pastors, strengthening collaborative initiatives and advancing the mission-centered formation that defines Catholic education in the region. She also will serve as a member of the Catholic school leadership team under his guidance, contributing to ongoing efforts to strengthen and sustain Catholic education throughout the diocese.
A seasoned Catholic school leader with more than 18 years of administrative experience, Lester has served in diverse school communities and is known for her commitment to mission-driven leadership, collaborative culture-building and data-informed instructional improvement. Her experience includes leading strategic planning, accreditation processes, faculty development and initiatives that support student growth academically, spiritually and personally.
Lester has been principal of Elyria Catholic since 2016.
Her prior experience includes five years as principal at St. Jude School, the elementary school of St. Jude Parish in Elyria, following three years as assistant principal there.
“I feel called to serve in this position because I find deep joy in helping and ministering to others as they grow,” Lester said. “I am energized by serving as a change agent and feel called to this role as part of my own ministry in Catholic education within the Diocese of Cleveland.”
“We are deeply grateful for Suzanne’s leadership and the many gifts she has shared with our community,” said Annie Heidersbach, Elyria Catholic president. “Her commitment to Catholic education, her care for students and families and her collaborative leadership have helped strengthen Elyria Catholic in many meaningful ways. While we will certainly miss her, we are proud that the diocese has recognized her talents and called her to serve the broader Catholic school community.”
Lester will continue serving as principal of Elyria Catholic through the end of the current school year.
Heidersbach said the school will work closely with the diocese to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
“We are committed to a thoughtful and thorough search process as we begin identifying the next principal for Elyria Catholic. Together with the diocese, we will seek a leader who will build upon the strong foundation of our school and continue the forward momentum of Elyria Catholic,” she said.
