A royal official—perhaps a man of rank in Herod’s household—comes to Jesus seeking healing for his son, who is lying at home near death. Jesus ultimately heals the boy because of the official’s faith. Yet one particular sentence from this Gospel invites our attention. It is a comment Jesus makes for the crowd to hear: “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”
Jesus wants us to believe that he is the Son of God, the Christ, even if we only hear about the miracles he worked for others and do not experience them ourselves. He desires a faith that is strengthened by miracles—but not one that depends upon them.
Still, God continues to work miracles in every age. Often, we need eyes of faith to recognize them. And when we do, our faith is deepened. May God continue to work wonders among us, the first and greatest being the Eucharist—his Body and Blood—made present at every Mass.
