The encounter between Jesus, the woman caught in adultery, and her accusers should always prompt us to reflect deeply on the true nature of God. Is God as harsh and judgmental as he is sometimes portrayed to be? Today’s Gospel clearly answers that question: No.
Jesus places the woman caught in adultery and her accusers on equal footing. He draws the men’s attention to their own sinfulness and then invites them to temper their judgment with these words: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
All have sinned and fallen short of what God desires for us (see Romans 3:23). As the saying goes, those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. And remember—God sees into the house of our souls far more clearly than we do.
