Today, Jesus declares that whoever keeps his word will never see death.
Then comes the most stunning claim of all: “Before Abraham came to be, I AM.” With these words, Jesus identifies himself with God who gave his name, I AM, to Moses as he prepared to meet Pharoah. Jesus’ listeners understand exactly what he is saying. He is making himself God’s equal. That is why they pick up stones to kill him.
We believe Jesus is who he says he is: our Lord and our God. And instead of raising stones, we raise our hands and hearts to worship him.
