Let us focus today on the psalm’s antiphon: “In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice.”
We are now one week from Good Friday. Opposition to Jesus intensifies because he makes clear his equality with God. “You, a man, are making yourself God,” his enemies accuse. Jesus does not defend himself. He simply remains faithful to who he is.
When they try to arrest him, Jesus escapes and returns to the place where his ministry began—the Jordan River, the site of his baptism. Along the way, one can imagine him praying the words of the psalm: “In my distress I called upon the Lord, and he heard my voice.”
And the Lord heard him. At the Jordan, many began to believe in Jesus.
There is always consolation to be found during the trials of life and hope to sustain us even in our moments of despair.
When we cry out to the Lord in our distress he does hear us.
