
Six seminarians will be ordained to the priesthood for service to the Diocese of Cleveland during a livestreamed Mass at 10 a.m. May 16 in the Cathedral of St, John the Evangelist.
Bishop Edward Malesic will be the presider. Concelebrants will include Auxiliary Bishop Michael Woost and Father Andy Turner, president/rector of Saint Mary Seminary.
The ordination includes the presentation of the elect, lying prostrate on the cathedral floor as a sign of humility, laying on of hands, prayer of consecration, investiture, anointing of hands with sacred chrism and presentation of the chalice and paten.
The six men, who were ordained as transitional deacons a year ago, have been in formation at Saint Mary Seminary, earning master’s degrees last week. Those to be ordained to the priesthood, their parents and home parishes are:
- Deacon Charles Renwyck Cairnie, son of Robert and Paula Cairnie (stepmother) and Alexa Cairnie, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Wooster
- Deacon Mitchell Timothy Carson, son of Dennis and Rhonda Carson, St. Peter Parish, North Ridgeville
- Deacon Cameron Michael Ferrell, son of Brandon and Carrie Ferrell, SS. Peter and Paul Parish, Doylestown
- Deacon Nathan Michael Frankart, son of Steve and Kim Frankart, St. Joseph Parish, Amherst
- Deacon Truong (Joseph) Viet Ho, son of Hoc Viet Ho and Lanh Thi Nguyen pf Ha Tinh, Vietnam, St. Boniface Parish, Cleveland
- Deacon Sean Patrick Neville, son of Jim and the late Colleen Neville, St. Mary of the Falls Parish, Olmsted Falls
They will join about 400 others who will be ordained to the priesthood around the country this year, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. CARA, established in 1964, is a national nonprofit that is affiliated with Georgetown University, It conducts scientific studies about the Catholic Church, including a survey each spring of men who are being ordained to the priesthood.
Seventy-eight percent of this year’s priestly ordinandi participated in the survey. Results show that 92% of them said they were encouraged to considered the priesthood by someone in their lives.
