Elyria Catholic wins first Scholastic Games of Lorain County championship

There’s a quiz show champion in Lorain County: Elyria Catholic High School.

The school’s three-member Scholastic Games of Lorain County team defeated Black River High School’s team by a score of 400-160 in the radio quiz show on May 19. The championship is scheduled to be rebroadcast at 6 p.m. May 26 on WDLW (FM 98.9/AM 1380) and on wdlwradio.com. Previous competitions are available as podcasts. By searching for “Scholastic Games.”

This is the 36th season for the show, which features two Lorain County high schools competing each week. Elyria Catholic is the 13thdifferent school to win the championship. The score for the championship show was the highest combined final scores of the year, according Jim Mehrling, who has hosted and produced Scholastic Games since its inception.

Maria Ochenas, Noah Hanlon and Vito Coreno, captain, comprise the Elyria Catholic team.

In the championship, Vito earned his third standout scholar award for his contributions, which included a cash prize for the student who contributes the most to his or her team. Maria won the award earlier in the season during Elyria Catholic’s first win on the program.

The championship program consisted of four rounds. In the first, all answers began with the letter “P.” Next was the current events round, use of buzzers took place in the third round and in the fourth round, there were clues of decreasing difficulty for each answer. Elyria Catholic continued to build its lead through all four rounds.

Among the show’s sponsors are the Nordson Corp. Foundation, the Community Foundation of Lorain County and the Nord Family Foundation. The Elyria Public Library System has hosted the competitions and sponsored the radio broadcasts for more than a decade.

Nine area colleges participate in the show’s tuition credit award program, which designates a $1,000 credit to one of the institutions to each of the participating high schools. The participating colleges and universities are Oberlin College, Lorain County Community College, Heidelberg, John Carroll and Tiffin universities, Ursuline College and Lake Erie College.
