The celebration for the 50th anniversary of Divine Word Parish began on June 27 with Mass and the blessing of a new crucifix. Bishop Edward Malesic presided at the opening liturgy, with Father David Woost, pastor, and Father James Caddy concelebrating. They were assisted by Deacons John Gazia and Jeremy Shafer. Deacon Ed Gardias served as the bishop’s master of ceremonies.

“I want to express my gratitude to Father David for inviting me to celebrate this opening Mass of your anniversary year,” Bishop Malesic said. “I also thank all the priests, deacons and parish staff, any religious of the parish, parish council members, ministry leaders, volunteers and all of you who continue to serve this parish with great dedication. Parishes do not thrive by accident – they flourish because generations of people say ‘yes’ to God,” he added.

“A parish is not simply a place where people attend Mass. It's a spiritual home; it's a community where people can encounter Jesus Christ. What makes Divine Word Parish special is precisely that spirit. Never be afraid to say, ‘I'm Catholic, and if you want to be Catholic, please come with us. We have some great news to share. We have a great story to tell,’” the bishop said.

To commemorate this significant anniversary, an anonymous benefactor commissioned renowned Cleveland sculptor Norbert Koehn to create a new crucifix for the church. The crucifix stands as the centerpiece of sanctuary renovations completed four years earlier. Koehn attended the anniversary opening Mass, joining the Divine Word community in a celebration marked by gratitude and joy.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, the Divine Word choir and musicians offered their own artistic tribute, performing “Your Divine Word, Stay in My Heart.” The original composition was written for the anniversary by Beck Harper, the parish music director. The hymn served as an expression of faith, thanksgiving and the community’s enduring devotion to God’s Word.

At the conclusion of Mass, Father Woost expressed his gratitude saying, “I am so lucky to be here. We have such an incredibly generous and hospitable parish. I’ve been here for 22 years. I hope I have another 22 years left in me. Divine Word is such a great place.”

Anniversary events will continue throughout the coming year.
