Bishop Edward Malesic was back in familiar territory on Aug. 15 when he celebrated Mass in honor of the 75thanniversary of the founding of the Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

He served as the fifth bishop of Greensburg from 2015 to 2020, when he was named the 12thbishop of Cleveland. Greensburg was Bishop Malesic’s first assignment after his episcopal ordination.

Greensburg Bishop Larry Kulick invited Bishop Malesic and a number of other clergy including Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, apostolic nuncio to the United States, to celebrate the milestone anniversary at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg.

Archbishop Caccia was the principal celebrant and homilist at the Mass, which was celebrated on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“It was wonderful to greet the people where I spent my first five years as a bishop,” said Bishop Malesic. “I appreciated the invitation from Bishop Kulick and his gracious hospitality, as well as the warm welcome from the faithful of Greensburg. It also was a joy to spend time with Archbishop Caccia, the new papal nuncio to the United States.”

The Diocese of Greensburg was established on March 10, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. It had been part of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. It has about 135,000 Catholics who are served by 78 parishes in seven deaneries, 15 schools and two diocesan high schools. Click here for more information on the Greensburg Diocese.
