In today's Gospel, Jesus asks a question that every generation must answer: "Who do you say that I am?"

Many opinions about Jesus were circulating in his own day. Some thought he was John the Baptist, others Elijah or one of the prophets. Today, the opinions are just as varied. Some see him as a great moral teacher. Others dismiss him altogether. But with Peter, we profess the faith of the Church: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus declares that this faith is the rock upon which he will build his Church—a foundation so strong that "the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it." He entrusts Peter with the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, a symbol of the unique responsibility to strengthen the Church in faith and unity.

That same faith has been handed down through Peter's successors, including our Holy Father, Pope Leo. To remain united with the Successor of Peter is to remain rooted in the faith that has sustained the Church for two thousand years. It is this shared profession of faith that makes us one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

Even though we assemble in multiple parishes, there must not be competition among us — other than to compete in being generous in the Lord’s service. We belong to one Church, after all. Jesus is the Lord of us all. Together, may we always remain united as members of Christ's one flock—guided by the Successor of Peter and inspired by Christ himself, our Good Shepherd.

May we always cherish the gift of our Catholic faith and, with Peter, boldly proclaim: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
