Poustinia: Into the Desert “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” - Mark 6:31
Poustinia, the Russian word for “desert,” is an invitation to step away from the noise, distractions, and busyness of everyday life and encounter the Lord in the silence. As we begin the Lenten season, the Office of Youth Ministry invites you to enter into this ancient spiritual tradition through 24 hours of silence, solitude, and prayer. In the simplicity of a room, with only bread and water, a spiritual icon, Scripture, and a journal, we will set aside the comforts and distractions we so often turn to and make space for what matters most: our relationship with Jesus Christ.
There will be no schedules to keep, conversations to have, or tasks to accomplish. Only the Lord, waiting for us in the desert, gently beckoning us to come away and be with Him.
Participants will gather for a few preparatory meetings (online) before the retreat to enter into the experience with intention and prayer. We will begin our time together with Mass before entering the silence, spending 24 hours alone with the Lord. We will conclude by breaking our fast together at Mass and sharing a meal, reflecting on the unique and personal ways Christ met each of us in the desert.
This Lent, come away from the noise and rediscover the beauty of being alone with God. You do not need to accomplish anything, prove anything, or bring anything but yourself. Simply come, be still, and listen. The Lord is calling you into the desert. Will you meet Him there?
