St. Teresa of Avila and St. Anthony of Padua are partner Catholic parishes seeking a reliable, skilled, and proactive Custodian to maintain their sacred spaces, parish halls, and grounds across both locations.
The Custodian will play an important role in the stewardship of parish facilities, ensuring that both locations are clean, safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. The ideal candidate is a “jack-of-all-trades” who takes pride in maintaining sparkling-clean facilities while also possessing hands-on skills in groundskeeping and moderate building repairs.
This position requires independent work across multiple sites, with responsibility for daily upkeep, seasonal needs, and maintaining consistent standards at both parish locations.
Job Type: Full-time, non-exempt (hourly)
Schedule: 30–39 hours per week

Locations: St. Teresa of Avila Parish, Sheffield Village, Ohio; and St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Lorain, Ohio
Perform light-to-moderate general maintenance and repairs at both parish locations, including:
Electrical: Replace light bulbs and ballasts, run wiring, and perform minor fixture repairs.
Plumbing: Repair leaky faucets, replace faucets and plumbing fixtures, address running toilets, and unclog drains.
Carpentry & General Repairs: Hang items, patch drywall, perform painting touch-ups, repair door hardware, and complete general labor and maintenance tasks.
Proactively identify maintenance issues and report major problems requiring licensed contractors to the Parish Administrator.
Maintain parish grounds throughout the year, including:
Seasonal mowing, trimming, weeding, and general lawn and grounds upkeep.
Snow removal during winter months.
Shoveling and salting sidewalks, steps, and main entryways to ensure safe access for Masses and parish events.
Maintaining reliable availability during inclement weather when snow and ice removal is necessary.
Maintain clean and sanitary parish facilities, including:
Restrooms.
Parish halls.
Offices.
Church spaces, as needed.
Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing surfaces.
Emptying trash.
Restocking cleaning and facility supplies.
Performing floor maintenance as needed.
Support parish and community events at both locations, including:
Community dinners.
Fundraisers.
Social gatherings.
Setting up tables, chairs, and specialized equipment.
Preparing parish halls and outdoor spaces to welcome guests.
Promptly breaking down and cleaning event spaces following events.
Previous experience in custodial work, building maintenance, or a related trade is highly desired.
Demonstrated ability to safely perform basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs.
Experience operating common groundskeeping equipment, including lawnmowers, weed whackers, and snow blowers.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong time-management skills.
Reliability and a strong work ethic.
Respectful demeanor supportive of the mission and environment of a Catholic Church.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Ability to travel between both parish locations.
Successful completion of required background checks and Diocesan requirements.
Compliance with VIRTUS requirements.
Qualified candidates must complete a hands-on electrical/mechanical skills test and a maintenance skills knowledge test prior to the in-person interview.
This is a physically demanding position. Candidates must be able to:
Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and reach frequently.
Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, snow, and rain.
Perform maintenance, cleaning, groundskeeping, and event-support duties across multiple facilities.
