Mass at Cathedral concludes national ?Fortnight for Freedom? with prayers to protect our Religious Liberties and Eliminate HHS Mandate
This Friday, the 4th of July, there will be a 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland to conclude the 2014 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM
Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon will be addressing the ongoing threat by the federal government to our basic First Amendment right of Freedom of Religion.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has encouraged Catholics across our country to participate in the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July with a strong focus on prayer, education, and reflection on our first freedom, freedom of religion.
Your prayers and participation are still needed in light of this week?s U. S. Supreme Court decision in the Hobby Lobby religious freedom case where the court ruled that closely held companies cannot be required to pay to cover some types of contraceptives for their employees. The companies had contended that to offer those contraceptives was against the religious beliefs of the companies and the court agreed.
However, other nonprofit, religiously affiliated groups, such as church-run hospitals, parochial schools, and charities have their lawsuits under appeal. Currently those non-profits are subject to government fines if they fail to offer the contraceptive medical coverage. They are contending a violation of the First Amendment?s Religious Freedom Provision in exempting them from the mandate.
