Brian Heskamp Named General Counsel for Diocese of Cleveland

Cleveland, OH – Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic, Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, is pleased to announce that Brian Heskamp has been named general counsel effective March 16.

In this role, Mr. Heskamp will serve as the principal legal advisor, providing strategic, practical, and mission-aligned legal guidance to the bishop, senior leadership, diocesan offices, parishes, schools, and certain affiliated entities. He will oversee a broad range of legal matters affecting the Diocese, including governance, contracts, employment, real estate, risk management, compliance, litigation, and organizational transactions, while ensuring adherence to applicable civil laws, ethical standards, and best practices for religious non-profit organizations.

Mr. Heskamp’s experience with the Cleveland Diocese includes 10 years as associate general counsel, and since January of this year, Interim General Counsel. Prior experience includes serving six years as senior associate attorney for Thacker Martinsek, LPA, of Cleveland, and nearly two years as associate attorney for Cooper & Walinski, LPA, also of Cleveland. In addition, he was a legal intern for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Ohio, in Toledo.

Mr. Heskamp earned his law degree from the Ave Maria School of Law, where he graduated with honors. He received Master of Public Administration and Bachelor of Science degrees from Bowling Green State University. He lives in Twinsburg with his wife, Katie, and their seven children.
