About 140 members of the permanent diaconate community in the Diocese of Cleveland – including active deacons, those in formation, retired deacons and deacons’ wives – participated in the annual diaconate convocation Oct. 31 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe.

The event was organized by Deacon Mike Hayes, diocesan delegate for active deacons, and Father Tom Dragga, who coordinates continuing education.

Deacon Hayes arranged for a nationally known keynote speaker, Deacon Greg Kandra, to address the group. He was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York in 2007 and now lives with his wife in Apopka, Florida. He is an Emmy-winning writer and producer, author, blogger, speaker and retreat leader. His produces the popular blog “The Deacon’s Bench.”

Deacon Kandra spoke about the importance of prayer and presence in the ministry of the deacon during his two addresses. He also took questions from the group.

Bishop Edward Malesic shared updates from the diocese with the group. The deacons were invited to submit questions, which the bishop answered.
