The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.
Mass for the Care of Creation
The Missal and Lectionary texts of the Mass “For the Care of Creation” / “Por el Cuidado de la creación” for use in the Dioceses of the United States of America were confirmed by decree of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on August 4, 2026 (Prot. n. 447/26). The texts are available in English and Spanish.
As a reminder, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is observed on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Since this day is observed liturgically as a weekday of Ordinary Time, it is permissible to celebrate any Mass for Various Needs and Occasions, including the Mass “For the Care of Creation.” Additional resources for the World Day of Prayer are available at USCCB.org/environment.
Resources for the 25th Anniversary of 9/11
On September 11, many parishes in the United States will be commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the attacks at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This would be an appropriate time to pray for all those who perished that day, and a time to plea to God for peace in a world that continues to be plagued by wars. The FDLC has compiled liturgy preparation and prayer resources to assist with this prayer. Click here for more information.
FDLC National Meeting and Study Day
The FDLC National Meeting will be held in Iowa City, September 29 – October 1, 2026. The meeting will focus on “The Word of God: Living and Effective.” Study Day, Wednesday, September 30, will include a wealth of information shared and networking with other like-minded individuals. The Diocesan Evening of Confession will take place on Wednesday, February 24, 2027.
October 2026 Liturgical Calendar:
October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, although this year, because it falls on a Sunday, we celebrate the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time. On or near the day, the community or a household may join in the blessing of pets and other animals. For the order of Blessing of Animals, see Book of Blessings, #942-965 or Book of Household Blessings and Prayers, #154-157. The first Sunday of October is also designated Respect Life Sunday.
October 18 is World Mission Sunday. Communities are encouraged to assist in the mission of the Church in spreading the gospel. The Mass for The Evangelization of Peoples (#18A, alt: B) may be used as found in the Roman Missal. See the note in the Ordo for readings. Click here for more information.
October 18 is also the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. A Health Care Mass may be celebrated on or near the day to honor doctors, nurses, medical technicians, hospital administrators, and emergency personnel in appreciation for their services. The suggested Mass formulary, when permitted, is For Giving Thanks to God, #49B.
Sunday, November 1 is The Solemnity of All Saints. Therefore, Masses on Saturday evening, October 31, are for the vigil of All Saints. Relics of the Saints may be exposed for veneration by the faithful. Relics may also carried in the opening procession of the All Saints Mass and placed before the altar or some other location of honor.
Sacramental Records Workshop
There will be a workshop for clergy and parish staff members who are responsible for parish records such as parish secretaries and office managers. In this workshop, Mrs. Mollie Kulig, judge and canonist, will provide participants with sacramental recording principles and procedures to be utilized in the parishes within the Diocese of Cleveland. Ms. Emily Ahlin, Diocesan Archivist, will discuss records retention, physical care of records, and our Diocesan Archives. Mr. Robert Koonce, Director of Deanery Operations, will provide an overview of what parishes should expect for their triennial review of parish records. There is no fee for the event. Angel Scholarship Fund (ASF)
Designated ASF Recommendation Reminder:
Attention Pastors, Principals, Business Managers, and Scholarship Coordinators: All schools must submit their 2026 Angel Scholarship recommendations for awarding their designated ASF dollars to asf@dioceseofcleveland.org by today, September 1st. The review and approval of these recommendations will take place in September, and distributions made in mid-to-late October. Contact Dené Hummon for more information on the ASF award process.
CCF Women's Giving Circle Sip & Learn: Art, Beauty, and the Catholic Faith
Members of the Catholic Community Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle will gather on October 8thfor an inspiring evening of fellowship and reflection as we explore the connection between beauty and our Catholic faith. Through images from nature and the arts, Sally Phelps Smith will share how beauty has shaped the Catholic tradition and inspired some of the world's greatest artistic achievements. Drawing on the words of St. John Paul II and her experience as an art historian, Sally will reflect on how beauty leads us to a deeper encounter with God. August 2026 Announcements
Rev. Mark S. Ott has been appointed Pastor of Holy Martyrs Parish, Medina. This appointment is effective 1 August 2026, and is in addition to his current assignment as Professor of Sacred Scripture for Saint Mary Seminary in Wickliffe. He will reside at Holy Martyrs Parish, Medina.
Rev. Damian J. Ference has been appointed Administrator of St. Michael Parish, Cleveland, effective 1 September 2026 through 30 November 2026, while the Rev. Mark R. Riley, Pastor of St. Michael Parish, Cleveland, is on sabbatical. This new assignment is in addition to his assignment as Vicar for Evangelization, and Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Cleveland. His residence remains unchanged.
Rev. Richard Bona has been appointed Rector of the Shrine of Saint Elizabeth, Cleveland, effective 1 June 2026. This assignment is in addition to his assignment as Pastor of St. Emeric Parish, Cleveland, and as Adjunct Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Cleveland Tribunal. His residence remains unchanged.
Rev. Stephen M. Spisak has been granted earlyretirement / Senior Priest-Retired status for health reasons effective 31 July 2026.
Dcn. Phillip P. Kraynik will conclude his diaconal assignment at St. Patrick Parish, Thompson, and has been granted retirement status as a deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland effective 30 October 2026.
Canon James T. Hoogerwerf, ICRSS, with the permission of Canon Matthew Talarico, ICRSS, US Provincial Superior of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, has concluded his appointment as Rector of the Shrine of Saint Elizabeth, Cleveland, and has been appointed Rector of Immaculate Conception Oratory, Cleveland, effective 1 June 2026.
Rev. Almachius Mushumbusi Rwejuna, with permission of Very Rev. Monsignor John Zuraw, Vicar General of the Diocese of Youngstown, has been granted faculties of the Diocese of Cleveland effective 1 August 2026 for a period of one year while he continues his studies at Kent State University and retains faculties with the Diocese of Youngstown.
Strengthening Our Faith Grants
(Part of the Rooted in Faith – Forward in Hope 2026 Initiative)
The grants provide funding for innovative and effective parish faith formation programs. Monies awarded build capacity for sacramental preparation as well as children, young people, young adults, and adult faith formation efforts. There is a limit of $15,000 on the amount that may be requested. Applications are currently available from the Digital Academy or contact the Office of Catechetical Formation at Lauren O’Hara or 216-696-6525 ext. 1920.
Catechetical Media Grants
(Funded by the annual Matching Funds Campaign of the Ohio Knights of Columbus)
Monies awarded provide critical funding for current and media-based catechetical materials for faith formation. Parishes and Schools are encouraged to apply. There is a limit of $1,000 per parish or school each year. Media Grant Application is available here.
Parish Respect Life & Social Concerns Contact Update
The Office for Human Life is seeking updated contact information for parish Respect Life and Social Concerns/Social Action committees. As we work to support and connect ministries that promote the Gospel of Life and Catholic Social Teaching, we invite committee coordinators to either email Tony Dipre directly or complete this brief questionnaire.
Grandparenting and Elderly
The United States celebrates Grandparents in September. The Catholic Grandparent Association has multiple resources on their site that include links to valuable ideas for parishes and individuals. The website is here.
Marriage Formation Guidelines Implementation Support
The MFM Office staff are available to meet individually with clergy to discuss implementation of the new guidelines and answer questions. Marriage Mentor Training - Host Parish Opportunity.
The Office of Marriage and Family Ministry is seeking additional parishes to host Marriage Mentor Training programs during the Spring 2027. Parishes may choose to host either a one-day training session or a two-evening training format. To learn more or to express interest in hosting, please contact Terri Yohman.

World Youth Day 2027 — Final Registration Deadline is September 15, 2026
Please help us spread the word. The Diocese of Cleveland will travel to Seoul, South Korea, August 1–10, 2027, to participate in World Youth Day alongside young Catholics from around the world. Parishes are encouraged to share this opportunity with young adults. Include it in parish communications and bulletins and personally invite those who may be interested in attending. Young Adult Roundtable — A Monthly Gathering for Ministry Leaders
The Young Adult Roundtable is a monthly online gathering for those who serve, lead, or support young adult ministry throughout the Diocese of Cleveland. Parish staff, clergy, religious, volunteers, and others interested in better accompanying young adults are invited to participate. World Day of Migrants and Refugees
September 27, 2026
On Sunday, September 27, the Church will observe the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. In his message for this year's observance, Pope Leo XIV reflects on the theme, "Even Just One of These Children." (Mt 18:10)
The Holy Father calls attention to the dignity and vulnerability of children who are migrants and refugees, many of whom have been forced to leave their homes because of war, poverty, violence, environmental disasters, and other hardships. He reminds us that behind every statistic is a child created in the image of God. He also challenges us to recognize Christ in those who are displaced and seeking safety, and to respond with compassion rather than indifference.
Pope Leo XIV has spoken clearly in support of immigrants and refugees, calling for policies and attitudes that respect their inherent dignity and humanity. His message invites us to reflect on our Christian responsibility to welcome the stranger, care for the vulnerable, and accompany those who have been forced to leave their homes in search of security and a better future.
As we mark this special day, let us pray for migrants and refugees, especially children. May we renew our commitment to welcome the stranger and accompany those seeking safety, hope, and a place to call home.

The USCCB has released its annual Respect Life Month Action Guide, with the 2026 theme, "Mary, Mother of Life." The Office for Human Life has ordered a supply of this year's prayer cards and posters for parishes wishing to participate in Respect Life Month. To request materials, please contact Victoria Uhase.
In addition, the Office for Human Life will be publishing resources throughout September and October that will be made available on the Office for Human Life website. Materials connect this year's theme with key aspects of human dignity highlighted in Dignitas Infinita (2024). A preview of our Respect Life Month implementation can be found here. The Diocesan Social Action Office of Lorain County is inviting any interested parishioners to participate in the following mental health training program.
“What to Do in the Moment” is a training presentation explaining what to do when a mental health emergency occurs. Participants will learn about: (1) How to respond in a crisis, (2) Crisis intervention training skills, and (3) Skills to use when making a call for help.
