Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which Christ’s apostolic ministry continues in the Church. Through ordination, Bishops, Priests, and Deacons receive the grace and authority to serve God’s people and carry out their sacred ministry.

In the Diocese of Cleveland, we are blessed with men who generously respond to God’s call to serve His Church through the priesthood and permanent diaconate.

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

Priesthood

Priests share in Christ’s ministerial priesthood and serve the People of God by proclaiming the Gospel, celebrating the Eucharist and other sacraments, and shepherding the community in communion with the Bishop. The Office of Vocation accompanies men who are discerning this call and provides guidance, retreat, spiritual direction and opportunities to learn more about seminary formation.

Diaconate

Deacons are ordained for a ministry of service in the liturgy, the Word and charity. They may proclaim the Gospel, preach, baptize, assist at marriages, preside at funerals and prayer services, and serve those in need, always in communion with and under the pastoral authority of the Bishop. The Diaconate Formation Program prepares men for this ministry through prayer, academic study and pastoral training.
