The Diocesan Memorandum (formerly the Clergy Memorandum) is a service of the Office of the Chancellor for clergy and lay leadership of the Diocese of Cleveland, providing a summary of relevant and timely information from the Office of the Bishop and other diocesan offices.
Reestablishment of Deaneries and Appointment of Deans
Bishop Malesic has reestablished deaneries in the Diocese of Cleveland, replacing the previous structure of districts, presbyteral convenors, and district chairpersons. The following priests are appointed to serve six-year terms as deans:
Bishop Malesic has also established the Episcopal Council in accord with canon 473 §4, CIC.
Collection for the Holy Father
Each year, the annual Peter’s Pence Collection in support of the works of the Holy Father is held in parishes across the country. The proceeds from this collection fund emergency financial assistance to those throughout the world who suffer from war, oppression, and natural disasters. This year’s Collection is scheduled for the weekend of 29-30 June 2024. Bulletin inserts and announcements can be found here.
July 2024 Liturgical Calendar Reminders:
July 3 is the Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle. Proper orations for St. Thomas, Apostle are used, with red vestments. The Gloria is sung. Readings are Proper (LECT # 593).
July 4 is Thursday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The Mass for Independence Day may be used. For the general intercessions, one may use the adaptation of the prayer composed by Archbishop John Carroll for the inauguration of George Washington, as found in the Book of Blessings, #1965.
July 22 is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene. Proper orations for St. Mary Magdalene are used, with white vestments. The Gloria is sung. Readings are Proper (LECT # 603).
July 25 is the Feast of St. James, Apostle. Proper orations for St. James, Apostle are used, with red vestments. The Gloria is sung. Readings are Proper (LECT # 605).
July 28 is World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. In 2021, Pope Francis established the celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and Elderly on the fourth Sunday of July, near the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus (July 26). Pope Francis has chosen a line from Psalm 71—“Do not cast me off in my old age”—as the theme for the 2024 celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. As the Catholic Church prepares for the Jubilee Year 2025, Pope Francis has asked Catholics to focus on prayer, which is why he chose the prayer of an elderly person from the Psalms for the theme.
Beginning with July 28, and for all four Sundays in August, the gospel is taken from John 6, on the Bread of Life. A series of homilies on the various aspects of the Mass would be appropriate.
