Position Summary
The Director of Music and Liturgy serves as a key member of the parish staff, responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the parish’s music and liturgical life in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. This person fosters active participation of the faithful in liturgy, provides formation for musicians and ministers, and ensures that the parish’s celebrations are beautiful, reverent, and prayerful.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Music Ministry
- Direct, rehearse, and accompany music for Sunday Masses, Holy Day Masses, and other major parish liturgies.
- Lead and develop the Adult Choir and Children’s Choir to encourage participation and musical growth.
- Provide music leadership for School Masses, collaborating with school faculty and staff.
- Direct and accompany a choir of Home School Students, integrating both choral formation and catechesis.
- Recruit, train, and schedule cantors and other music ministers.
- Regularly conduct sound checks to maintain sound quality in the worship space.
Liturgy & Formation
- Chair or participate actively in the Liturgy Commission to plan parish liturgies.
- Offer music and prayer meetings and other opportunities for spiritual enrichment.
- Provide adult education on the liturgy and its meaning throughout the liturgical year.
- Collaborate with the Art & Environment Committee, guiding seasonal decor in line with liturgical norms.
- Work closely with the Sacristan to ensure all liturgical needs (books, vessels, linens) are met.
- Collaborate with clergy and staff to prepare liturgies for special occasions (First Communion, Confirmation, weddings, funerals, etc.).
Leadership & Collaboration
- Form and mentor liturgical ministers (lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers) as needed.
- Ensure that liturgical practices follow the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) and diocesan guidelines.
- Serve as a liaison between clergy, staff, volunteers, and musicians to ensure smooth liturgical celebrations.
Qualifications
- Deep understanding and commitment to Catholic liturgy, theology, and Church documents on sacred music.
- Degree in music, liturgy, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Preferred proficiency in organ, piano, and choral direction.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to inspire and collaborate with parishioners of all ages.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills, including scheduling, budgeting, and volunteer coordination.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, Holy Days, and other parish events as required.
