Parish Facilities Engineer
Reports To: Director of Parish Operations
Workdays: Monday–Friday; weekends as needed
Work Hours: 7:30 AM–3:30 PM; additional/off-hours work as needed
The Parish Facilities Engineer, under the supervision of the Director of Parish Operations, is responsible for the safety, maintenance, and effective operation of church and school buildings and grounds. This includes oversight of HVAC, electrical, fire/alarm, plumbing, and other building systems.
The Parish Facilities Engineer leads maintenance personnel, oversees vendor repairs and projects, and provides input on facility and capital budgets to ensure a secure, safe, clean, and functional environment for parishioners, staff, school personnel, and students. The position maintains accountability and ownership for all established commitments.
Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of parish properties, including building security, locked doors, and surveillance systems.
Create, advise on, and oversee scheduled routine maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, lighting, parking lots, playgrounds, roofing, and other facility systems to prolong their useful life.
Advise on the selection, scheduling, and supervision of contractors for repairs, renovations, and grounds maintenance services that cannot be completed by the maintenance team.
Ensure compliance with applicable local fire, safety, and occupational codes.
Manage emergency preparedness plans in collaboration with the parish safety team.
Set up rooms and facilities for church events, funerals, meetings, and other activities in coordination with church staff.
Work with the Director of Parish Operations to provide input for annual maintenance and capital budgets.
Report on facility conditions and needs to parish leadership.
Prepare and maintain a master list of needed capital improvements.
Assist with gathering estimates from approved vendors for capital projects.
Oversee approved capital improvement projects once funding and vendors have been authorized, or recommend the appropriate method for overseeing improvements.
Facilitate the purchase of routine supplies, repair parts, equipment, and other maintenance needs using approved spending processes and limits.
Work closely with the Bookkeeper to retain required receipts and financial records.
Periodically review facility operations and utility costs to promote efficient use of resources and recommend potential cost reductions.
Participate in the hiring and termination of supervised parish maintenance staff under the direction of the Director of Parish Operations.
Collaborate with parish maintenance, custodial, and janitorial staff.
Provide input to the Director of Parish Operations for periodic employee performance reviews.
Identify performance concerns and work with employees to achieve satisfactory performance.
Maintain positive working relationships and effective, collaborative communication with parish and school staff, external stakeholders, and outside authorities as appropriate.
Attend pastoral staff meetings, building and grounds meetings, and parish council meetings as necessary or directed by the Director of Parish Operations.
Consult with and advise the Director of Parish Operations, Pastor, and Principal regarding facilities maintenance, prevention, and safety matters affecting the parish and school.
Working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
Experience with personnel, vendor, and supervisory management.
Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Proactive approach to problem-solving.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Commitment to upholding the mission and values of the Catholic Church and the mission of the Catholic parish and school.
Ability to manage, facilitate, and coordinate projects and activities through successful completion within established timelines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, G-Suite, and/or other business software.
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of five years of experience with buildings and grounds, construction management, or industrial facility maintenance.
Demonstrated supervisory experience and personnel management skills.
Ability to diagnose and perform routine to mid-level repairs.
Facilities management certifications or equivalent practical experience are a plus.
Ability to work from ladders and adjust to heights and close quarters.
Ability to withstand heat and cold and work in varying environmental conditions.
Good eye-hand coordination and physical flexibility.
Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to operate owned and rented equipment, including backhoes and lifts, at heights of up to 40 feet.
Evening and weekend work may be required.
Must be available to provide coverage for emergent needs at unpredictable times, including utility issues, safety concerns, and special events.
Facilities oversight may require intermittent outdoor work in extreme weather conditions or work in unfinished construction areas and spaces undergoing repair.
The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The position requires flexibility for evenings, weekends, after-hours emergencies, special events, and other facility needs as they arise.
