The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and Elyria Catholic High School are pleased to accept applications for the position of Custodian. Elyria Catholic High School (ECHS) is a Diocesan–owned, comprehensive, coeducational, Catholic high school committed to academic excellence and the development of student gifts. Enrollment is 480 students in grades 9 through 12.
Basic Function:
Working under the direction of the Director of Facilities & Technology, the Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment across the Elyria Catholic High School campus. Responsibilities include using appropriate cleaning materials to care for equipment and supplies, along with routine tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and sanitizing restrooms.
The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in their work, values being part of a great team, and consistently goes the extra mile to support a positive and well-maintained school environment. A strong team player mindset and a willingness to contribute wherever needed are essential.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and order throughout school buildings and property
- Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming floors
- Empty trash receptacles and ensure proper disposal
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restroom facilities
- Dust furniture, walls, and equipment
- Wash windows, mirrors, and partitions using appropriate cleaning agents
- Safely operate chemical cleaners and power equipment to avoid damage to surfaces
- Polish fixtures and furniture as needed
- Shampoo or steam-clean carpets and rugs
- Report maintenance needs or system issues to the Director
- Replenish cleaning and restroom supplies
- Assist with setup and cleanup for school events (e.g., athletics, performing arts, staff meetings)
- Participate in summer maintenance projects such as painting, floor refinishing, and grounds work
- Attend required workshops, in-services, and staff meetings
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support school operations
- May be required to assist with post-event cleanup, including weekend shifts
Requirements:
- Commitment to upholding the mission, vision, and values of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Cleveland
- High school diploma required; 1–3 years of custodial experience preferred
- Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions and safety protocols
- Proficient in operating vacuums, floor machines, and related custodial equipment
- Safe and effective use of cleaning supplies and tools
- Familiarity with hand and power tools relevant to custodial tasks
- Physically capable of lifting and handling items up to 50 pounds
- Ability to read, comprehend, and enforce safety procedures
- Willingness to adjust work schedule to support school events and activities
- Regular shift: Monday–Friday, approximately 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM (30–35 hours per week)
- Flexibility to work beyond scheduled hours on weekdays as needed
- Availability to work occasional weekends (e.g., Saturday mornings following Friday football games) is a plus
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
- Experience with floor waxing is beneficial
- Basic knowledge of maintenance tasks (e.g., plumbing, electrical, structural) is a plus
- Being a team player is a must.
